- Postsecondary education is still a key predictor of success: Wages for college graduates are 80% higher than those for high school graduates, and during the pandemic, those without a college degree suffered significantly more job losses than college graduates. It’s clear that fighting disparities in higher education is one of the most powerful ways to promote a more equitable society.
- Federal funding is not enough: When free community college got bumped from the federal government’s Build Back Better plan, we lost a key tool for supporting the postsecondary achievement of students from low-income backgrounds. As a result, for these students to succeed they need wrap-around services like the kinds that PeerForward provides in high schools and colleges across the country. A report from the University of Chicago Inclusive Economy Lab earlier this month found that when community college students have access to support services, their odds of finishing their associate degree within three years increase by 18 percent.
- We are growing our impact every day: PeerForward is expanding beyond our core high school program, reaching ever more students through our new PeerForward in College and Affiliates programs. - Young people and people of color are donating more than ever before: Members of Gen Z as well as Black and Latinx donors are more likely than their white counterparts to report an increase in their charitable giving since the start of the pandemic, according to a report by the Blackbaud Institute. PeerForward believes that young leaders of color have the power to invest in and uplift their communities, and donating is an important way to make an impact.
- Our students are putting in the work: When you support PeerForward, you’re also supporting the efforts of Peer Leaders to increase opportunity and promote equity in their communities. Whether it’s students like Veronica Oliveira from Broward College hosting food drives on campus, or leaders like Margarita Vega from Bowie High School launching college scholarship awareness events, our Peer Leaders show up for those around them – and they need donors to show up for them, too.
