PeerForward’s summer workshops would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers.
The higher education application process can seem daunting to many rising high school seniors, particularly those with limited access to college counseling. But by serving as college and writing coaches each summer, PeerForward volunteers demystify the admissions process and help students find the confidence to share their stories and pursue their goals.
There are so many reasons to appreciate our volunteers – but what keeps them motivated to come back year after year?
College Coach Dave Best, President, and Founder of Best College Consulting, explains, “PeerForward inspires me throughout the year to volunteer. Without a doubt, my favorite time of the year is when I serve PeerForward. Collaborating with amazing teams of college and essay coaches reminds me how together we can change lives one at a time. I am energized by the impressive students I am blessed to work with. It is my pleasure to create their college lists and even aid my fellow college coaches to target best-fit schools. My PeerForward students inspire me to dream big and appreciate who I am.”
In addition to the unforgettable connections coaches form with students and fellow volunteers, their belief in PeerForward’s mission drives them to put in the work. Susan Angel Beck, Retired Managing Director at Deloitte and PeerForward Writing Coach, reflects:
“One of the most effective ways to break generational poverty is education. Therefore, I believe all students – regardless of financial situation – should pursue post-secondary education so they can support themselves and their families in a way that makes them happy. Sometimes that will be at a four-year university. Sometimes at a community college. Sometimes in a vocational program. What’s important is that each student creates a plan that is right for him/her. PeerForward helps low-income students envision their future and then find ways to attain those dreams.”
For many volunteers, their time with PeerForward sparks a lifelong commitment to service:
“The volunteer experience has been superb, like no other I have ever found. The community culture has been so giving, warm, vibrant, optimistic, and accepting, that it inspires me to do my best and gives me hope that there is a brighter future for [the students] and others they engage with. It has changed my outlook on life and catapulted me into a life of service with meaning that I never thought possible.” – Caren Voeller, Retired Educator, and PeerForward College Coach
This summer, PeerForward volunteers will have the opportunity to impact hundreds of students across the country virtually and in-person during our 2022 PeerForward Workshop season. There’s still time to become a writing or college coach, visit www.peerforward.org/volunteer to learn more and apply.
Thank you, volunteers!
