On Wednesday, October 9th, students from all over Prince George’s County flocked to the gymnasium of Dr. Henry A Wise Jr. High School to attend the College and Career Fair hosted by our Wise Peer Leaders. Read more about their stunning ‘Campaign Apply’
Our Peer Leaders worked tirelessly to prepare the event for their fellow students. As a team, they prepare an event with diverse postsecondary representatives and training opportunities for their peers to explore.
Upon arrival, the careful planning that went into this event was evident. A Peer Leader stationed at the door, eager to greet attendees and point them towards the gymnasium; a group of students in customized Wise High School PeerForward shirts at the welcome table; even more Peer Leaders casually providing those who arrived with crucial information about the event. Representatives from over 45 college, trade programs, military branches, and first responder trainings were posted at booths that lined the gymnasium. Some institutions even offered on-site admissions!
The event was about much more than creating a post-high school plan. It was a celebration of how many opportunities await the talented and capable students of Prince George’s County. The photo booth, concessions stand, and DJ added to the electrifying atmosphere. This wasn’t your average college fair. PeerForward Peer Leaders made sure of that.
The turnout far exceeded what they had anticipated. Several Peer Leaders expressed their excitement over the number of students who attended. Their Advisor, Elizabeth Dennis, commented on how proud she was of her team, stating that she was thrilled to see their hard work pay off.
PeerForward teams from different schools across Prince George’s County came together to attend and support the Wise Peer Leaders. Throughout the night, you could see Peer Leaders from varying teams walking though the gymnasium together, answering questions and stopping at booths. With the help of the DJ, we gathered all members of our PeerForward family together to take a group picture commemorating the event.
We had the opportunity to catch up with Wise Peer Leaders to discuss the College and Career Fair. Giselle Broadus, one of the Wise PeerForward captains who graciously acted as our guide for the evening, shared her thoughts, “My Peer Leaders put in so much effort, so much commitment, and so much dedication just to get this done. [They] came in each and every day, working with us, making banners, and talking with representatives just to put this together and it has been really beautiful. I couldn’t be more proud, honestly.” As the event came to a close, we sat down with Peer Leader Aminata Washington to hear about her experience. She excitedly shared that she had been admitted into 3 schools that night. “It was through on-site admissions,” she said, “Coppin State University, Sheppard University, and University of District of Columbia [accepted me]!”
We at PeerForward want to express how proud we are of every Peer Leaders who played a hand in the success of the Wise High School College and Career Fair! In their effort to get every senior to apply to 3 or more colleges, events like this show just how dedicated our students are to helping their peers succeed.
