Meet this week’s Alumni Spotlight: Giivuii Frazer! Giivuii acted as captain of the Duval High School PeerForward team until her graduation in 2023. She now attends University of Maryland College Park where she is majoring in biomedical engineering. We caught up with her to learn more about how PeerForward shaped her perspective on college and what advice she would give to current Peer Leaders:

Why do YOU serve?

I serve as a PeerForward Alumni because I believe in the power of peer support when comes to finding a postsecondary pathway. Having been through these challenges myself, I want to give back and help my peers by ensuring they have access and guidance to abundant resources.

What’s been the best part of attending your college/university?

The best part for me has been the welcoming campus community. There’s such a diverse range of people, clubs, and activities to get involved in. All of this has made it possible for me to explore new hobbies and establish lifelong friendships. My learning experience has been enhanced by the faculty’s immense knowledge and encouragement. I feel like my time at the University of Maryland has given me a well-rounded education and priceless memories.

How did PeerForward change your perspective of college?

PeerForward has helped me understand the value of a community. I’ve learned a lot about navigating college. I also saw firsthand the benefit of peer support when choosing a higher education program. It helped me understand that going to college is a road that is attainable and worthwhile with the right assistance and knowledge. PeerForward showed me the true meaning of empowerment.

How have you been a positive influence on your peers in college?

I’ve made an effort to have a positive impact on others by being a dependable source of support and motivation for my peers. I’ve participated actively in study groups, lending a hand when necessary while also being open to receiving help myself, and I’ve been involved in a number of campus organizations that promote inclusivity and teamwork, such as NABA INC., the Black Engineer Society, Incentive Awards Program, and Enrage Models. It is my goal that leading by example will promote a positive and inclusive environment.

What’s one piece of college advice you’d offer Peer Leaders?

One crucial piece of advice is to to not feel discouraged when you are struggling. If you fall get back up as many times as needed. Ask for assistance, attend the free tutoring sessions your college offers, stop by office hours, organize study sessions, and keep in mind that college is a learning process. Setbacks are a normal part of learning, and it’s through these encounters that we frequently identify our genuine talents and places for development.
