Across the country, PeerForward teams have been convening for Fall Training Camps! This is a time for Peer Leaders to come together with other teams, Advisors, and Coaches to continue prepping their college-going campaigns and engage in team-building exercises. By learning more about team dynamics and collectively working through challenges and goals, PeerForward teams are given time to refine their vision for the year and better understand how to work together effectively.
During an exercise where each team is asked to declare a mission statement, teams have proudly written down responses like the following:
“Our mission is to bridge the gap between students and teachers. We help students self-advocate and make sure students are ready for postsecondary success.”
– PeerForward team from Suitland High School, Md.
“Mission: to improve the college-going culture in order to set a path for the younger generation.”
-PeerForward team from Charles H. Flowers High School, Md.
Peer Leaders also had a chance to hear from panels of volunteers, some being from our corporate partners like Capital One and Deloitte. Volunteers have offered helpful advice from their own college and career journeys, providing students with inspiring testimonials and personal do’s-and-don’ts for navigating life after high school graduation.
So far, 16 training camps have been conducted in states like California, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, New York, West Virginia, Rhode Island and Texas. We’ve trained 291 12th grade Peer Leaders, 193 11th grade Peer Leaders, and 49 Advisors on how to make their campaigns to get students to plan for college, complete the federal financial aid form, and apply to three or more higher education institutions.
No matter the location, teams have been eager to share their energy and excitement from training camps on social media. Here are a few highlights:
