PeerForward Peer Leader Dasha Good graduated Ballou Senior High School in Washington, DC and thought she’d spend her summer deciding on what she will major in when she gets to Old Dominion University, and thinking about ways to give back to her community. She will be the first in her family to go to college.
Peer Leader Kion Douglas graduated Charles Flowers High School in Prince George’s County, MD after earning 324 hours of community service, serving on student government, and receiving scholarships from Zeta Phi Beta to attend Norfolk State University. He figured he had enough to be proud of.
On July 19, Dasha and Kion had a lot more to celebrate. They were two of only 130 college-bound students invited to The White House for the Beating the Odds Summit. This annual event, hosted by the First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative and Better Make Room campaign, celebrates the accomplishments of students who have overcome substantial obstacles to enroll in college, while also providing them with tips and resources to better prepare for then for the moment they step on campus in the fall. Kion had the honor of asking the First Lady a question during the key session.
Dasha and Kion served PeerForward with honor and passion, and proved that student driven change isn’t a theory; it’s a reality.
